OUR DOGS

​OUR DOGS:  Depending on your situation, we have trained dogs ready to assist with your wildlife control needs.  Utilizing trained dogs is essential when traps and poisons cannot be used. Our dogs aren't just working dogs, they are part of our family as well.

Ares Dog of War - Ares is a Patterdale Terrier from "California Catchers" working dog kennel.  He is only about 15 lbs, but is an intense little hunting machine.  Ares will attempt to hunt anything, but we limit him to animals in his weight class.  He hunts rats, raccoons, possums, rabbits, squirrels, pheasant, feral cats and foxes.  He does an excellent job as a draw dog, pulling the animals out of their hiding places for capture.  Ares is mostly retired now, but we have the next generation out of his blood in training to take his place.

Taz Von Pape: Taz is a purpose bred cross breed. He is 3/4 German Jagdterrier and 1/4 Deutch Drahthaar.  I also had his littermate, Hanz Von Pape, who went to a friend.  The cross was done to keep the jagdterrier drive and hunt while adding size.  Taz weighs about 40 lbs, twice the size of your average jagdterrier.  Taz has been worked on upland game and wild hogs.  He is still a young pup, but gets better every time out.  I am hoping to get him working coyote calling in the near future.

Roxy Von Pape: ​Roxy is an airedale terrier.  Roxy comes from a line of hog hunting dogs out of Texas.  Roxy has been worked on upland birds, wild hogs and blood tracking.  She has an excellent nose and a sweet temperament.  She was recently bred to the brother of Reyna Von Pape (listed below under past dogs).  I have high hopes for this litter and expect excellent workers from the breeding.

Nala Von Pape:  Nala is a Kangal.  Kangals are livestock guardians and considered by many to be the most powerful dogs in the world!  Nala works as a livestock guardian, guarding goats and sheep. She is the family favorite with her excellent temperament.

Mishi:  Mishi is a patterdale terrier.  She has an excellent nose, is very smart, and loves nothing more than to hunt vermin.  She has primarily hunted rats and possums.  I got Mishi as an adult.  I am hoping to get her on her first raccoons soon. She is the dam of Ares' daughter, Honey Badger Von Pape, listed below under pups in training.

We currently have several dogs in training, including patterdale Ares' grandson, Gulo Gulo Von Pape, Ares daughter, Honey Badger Von Pape, an American Staghound named Horse, and a young Airedale Terrier, King Kodiak Von Pape.

PAST DOGS

Reyna Von Pape - Reyna was an Airedale Terrier and was a very versatile dog.  She was a trained service dog as well as a hunter. She had been worked on pheasant, raccoon, coyotes, rabbits and other varmints.  She had began training on wild hogs, but sadly died as a result of an auto accident.

Deep Swamp Donnie -  Donnie was an Airedale Terrier who was raised and trained in the Georgia swamps specifically to hunt wild hogs.  He would find and bay his own pigs and was an asset to our team.  Some of his littermates are with government trappers/hunters and have worked mountain lions, bears, coyotes, bobcats, upland birds and waterfowl.  Shortly after I got Donnie I took him to Texas to see if he was the hog hunter I had been promised.  Donnie did not disappoint, he was an excellent hog dog.  In California, Donnie hunted wild hogs, pheasant, coyote, and raccoons.  Sadly Donnie has passed on to doggie heaven, but I am hoping to have pups from him in the future.  Luckily we stored semen on him before he passed.

Mogollon Rim's Sandhill Zelda - Zelda is a redline airedale terrier.  Redlines are pure bred airedales with a genetic anomaly causing a shorter coat. The coat is still wire haired and has an undercoat, just like all airedales only shorter.  DNA tests of true redlines show 100% airedale.  Although they have a shorter coat than today's standard show airedale, they are able to be AKC registered and fall within the AKC standard. Many early 1900 airedale show champions had this coat type, so it is thought to be a throwback genetically of old traits within the breed.  Solid black or red airedales, regardless of DNA tests showing 100% airedale blood, are outside of the standard and cannot be registered.  She was an excellent upland hunter.  She bayed a few hogs, but ultimately went to a friend.  She was a sweetheart!   

Krypto The Superdog: Krypto was a dogo argentino.  He ultimately did not make the cut due to temperament issues, but was a great working dog otherwise.

Blitzkrieg Von Pape: Blitz was a German Jadgterrier, and one of the hardest working hunting dogs I have ever owned.  Sadly, Blitz was killed by coyotes, but was a big part of my inspiration in getting into this line of work.
